The principal behind the proposed Iceland MotoPark design is to create a motorsport destination. The design accommodates all of the known and anticipated demands from the Icelandic motorsport community, with a versatile use designed-in from the outset to allow use for specialised driver training including road safety, specialist and emergency vehicles. Knowing that motorsport represents only a small fraction of the main track use, emphasis on corporate, private hire, product launch and other non-race track activities has helped form the design and specifications.
Another fundamental principle for the project is the need to build in phases to ensure the revenue from development funds the cost of building the motorsport destination; for this reason a modular approach to the design has been taken and a logical, practical and cost effective mechanism has been established to allow each new facility to be built year-on-year without reducing the efficacy of those facilities built and in use.
In the knowledge that Iceland could probably not sustain the capital investment requirements to build another permanent road circuit, the design intends the permutations of track use to offer the local racing and track day user ‘scene’ with versatility and distinct character from each of the three main permutations; The Club Circuit, Secondary circuit and Main circuit should each ‘feel’ different, thereby maintaining use and interest by all parties.
The location of the track has been challenged by all Stakeholders during the Master Planning process and the resulting track location was verified by four key factors:
The track is located next to the main entertainment/retail node for the site allowing key elements from both to complement one another
The land in the area for the pit & paddock is relatively level allowing for reduced ground enabling works
The remaining land for the circuit offers good natural topography to make the circuit interesting from a spectator’s and driver’s perspective
The circuit is located as far away as possible from the old town of Keflavik minimising disturbance to existing residents during the development phases
